Progress Photos

Progress photos are one of the most powerful ways to track your fitness journey. The scale only tells part of the story — photos show you changes in body composition, posture, and muscle definition that numbers cannot capture.

Level includes a guided camera that walks you through taking consistent front and side photos, a photo timeline that organizes your photos by week, and a comparison view that puts two check-ins side by side.

Taking progress photos

Progress photos are captured during your weekly check-in. When you complete a check-in at the end of each training week, Level will prompt you to take photos.

The guided camera

When you start a photo session, Level opens a guided camera that walks you through two poses:

  1. Front photo — Face the camera with your arms at your sides. Try to match your position each week for the most accurate comparison.
  2. Side photo — Turn to your left side and stand tall. Keep the same distance from the camera as last time.

For each pose, you will see:

  • A body silhouette overlay on the screen to help you line up your position
  • Pose tips that remind you how to stand
  • A 3-second countdown timer before the photo is taken, so you can get set

After each photo is captured, you get a preview where you can accept it or retake it. Once you are happy with both the front and side photos, tap Done to save them.

Tips for better photos

  • Use the same spot. Find a location with consistent lighting and background. A plain wall works well.
  • Same distance. Stand roughly the same distance from the camera each week. This makes comparisons much more accurate.
  • Same time of day. Body composition can look different morning vs evening. Picking a consistent time helps.
  • Wear similar clothing. Fitted shorts and a tank top (or similar) make changes easier to see.
  • Good lighting. Natural light or bright, even indoor lighting works best. Avoid harsh shadows or backlighting.

Your photo timeline

All of your progress photos are organized in a timeline view, grouped by week. To access it, tap Progress in the app navigation.

Each week shows your front and side photos as thumbnail cards. You can:

  • Tap a photo to open it full-size in a lightbox
  • Load more weeks by scrolling down — older photos load automatically as you reach the bottom of the page

The timeline shows your most recent check-in first, so you always see your latest photos at the top.

Comparing photos side by side

The comparison view is where progress photos really shine. It puts two different weeks next to each other so you can see changes that might be invisible day to day but obvious over weeks or months.

How to compare

  1. From the photo timeline, tap the Compare button
  2. Select two weeks you want to compare by tapping their cards
  3. Tap Compare Selected to open the side-by-side view

The comparison view shows:

  • Front photos from each week, side by side
  • Side photos from each week, side by side
  • Body measurement changes — if you logged measurements during your check-ins (weight, waist, chest, arms, hips, thighs), Level shows the difference between the two weeks with trend indicators

Once you are in the comparison view, you can cycle through different weeks without going back to the timeline:

  • On desktop — Use the arrow keys to move through weeks. Use Ctrl+scroll to zoom in on the photos.
  • On mobile — Swipe left or right to cycle weeks. Pinch to zoom in on photos.
  • Pin a week — Tap “Pin this week” to lock one side in place while you cycle through the other side. This is useful for comparing your starting point against multiple later weeks.

Each side has its own navigation arrows so you can independently pick which two weeks to compare.

How your coach uses progress photos

When your coach runs a weekly review or builds your next training phase, it has access to your progress photos. The coach uses AI-powered body composition analysis to assess visual changes alongside your workout data and nutrition logs.

This means your coach can notice things like changes in muscle definition or body fat distribution and factor them into your training plan — even if the scale has not moved much.

Privacy

Your progress photos are stored securely and are only visible to you. They are never shared with other users or used for any purpose other than your own progress tracking and coach analysis.
